Ripple Effect

One of the things people know Convivium for is our Free Casserole Program.

Every week, we make, bake, and give away 250 free, healthy casseroles to our neighbors in need. There are no requirements for receiving a casserole. No paperwork. No income verification. No questions about whether you “really need” one. If you feel you need a casserole, you are welcome to take one.

This often prompts a question from well-meaning people:

“Don’t you worry that you’ll be taken advantage of?”

The short answer is no.

Another short answer: It’s a gift.

We could spend a tremendous amount of time and energy trying to determine who deserves a casserole and who doesn't. Or we can let go of that kind of thinking and simply give freely.

We have chosen the latter and some pretty amazing things have happened as a result.

When we first started the program, there was a woman who would come to pick up a casserole and a recipe. If she liked the casserole, she would go home and make six more to give to families in need.

Think about that.

We gave one casserole. She turned it into six.

That is the ripple effect.

Or there was the woman who had a casserole delivered to her each week. She was blind and, when her delivery driver arrived, would often ask her to come inside, dish up her meal, and put the leftovers in the refrigerator.

Over time, the two became close.

One evening, there was a snafu in our delivery routes and her casserole wasn't delivered. She called us in a panic. It was the one night of the week when her son didn't have to cook for her, and she really needed our help.

By then, we had become an integral part of her week.

When she passed away, her delivery driver made a donation to our casserole program in her memory.

And then, more recently, we received a note from the daughter of one of our casserole recipients. I'll paraphrase it here:

“I was driving down the street and saw your Convivium sign, and I was hit with a wave of emotion. Before my dad passed, things had started to decline. I think every week my aunt would pick up a casserole for him to eat because he was unable to do much for himself. At the time, I was younger and didn't think much of it. But now, looking back, it means so much to me that he was able to have a warm, tasty meal to eat—one of the few things he could still enjoy. I hope someday I'm in a position to give back in the same way that Convivium has.”

And that's just it.

You never know what you set in motion when you give freely.

A casserole becomes a meal.

A meal becomes comfort.

Comfort becomes a memory.

A gift inspires another gift.

And somewhere down the line, someone who once received help may find themselves in a position to help someone else.

That is the ripple effect.

Help us keep it going.

The Free Casserole Program costs approximately $120,000 each year to operate. We fund that cost through a combination of grants and individual donations.

Unfortunately, this year, one of the grants we have counted on to support the program did not come through. We don't want that to mean fewer casseroles for our neighbors.

So we're asking our community to step up and help us fill the gap.

The most helpful way to do that is through a monthly recurring gift.

A gift of $40 a month provides enough support to feed one family for a month.

But every gift matters. $10 matters. $20 matters. $40 matters. And if you're able to give more, we will put it to work immediately.

Because this isn't just about a casserole.

It's about dignity. It's about nourishment. It's about knowing that someone in your community cares whether you have dinner tonight.

And it's about what happens when one small act of generosity sets another one in motion.

Help us keep the ripple going and make a monthly gift.

Thank you for believing, as we do, that sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply give freely.

Yours convivially,
