Improving Life Through Food

Monday, March 23, 2026

Our mission at Convivium Urban Farmstead is to improve life through food. And by this we mean all life – the lives of people, but also the environment, the soil, the well-being our community and our neighborhood.

We use food – the growing, preparing and enjoyment of food – as the catalyst for these improvements.

Using this a framework for our work here, means we welcome and thrive on many diverse activities.

In the two-week period at the end of March and beginning of April, here are just some of the diverse activities that we are hosting here at Convivium:

A nutrition based cooking classes for Black men
A service day for students from Tri-state Christian School
Maple syrup production from trees throughout Dubuque
Starting seeds for 114 types of vegetables and herbs we’ll grow in our gardens this year
Bringing home baby chicks that will add to our flock of egg-laying hens
Feeding our three hives of bees that we successfully over-wintered
Hosting a Passover Seder
Hosting an Easter Brunch
Handing out 1,000 casseroles to folks in need
Handing out 40 boxes of whole food ingredients to those in need
Hosting a Drag Show

This diversity is not incidental—it is essential. Strong communities are built when different people, perspectives, and traditions are not only welcomed, but actively woven together. Food gives us a powerful way to do that. It allows us to nourish bodies, improve our soil, , improve our health, honor cultures, meet needs, and create connection across differences. At Convivium, providing a framework and platform for this to happen isn’t a side note to our mission—it is how our mission comes to life.

Yours convivially,
