Teach a Man to Fish

Monday, July 6, 2026

Twice a month, on Wednesdays at noon, our Learning Center comes alive with conversation. We host free Lunch & Learns that are free and open to everyone in our community. One session each month focuses on gardening, the other on food. Over the years we've explored everything from honey bees and growing tomatoes to the life of Julia Child, food insecurity, and different philosophies of gardening.

Sharing knowledge about food is one of the core reasons Convivium exists. We teach in many different ways: through our demonstration gardens, through the type of food we serve in the restaurant, through fundraising events like our Garden Gala, through our cooking classes with sliding-scale pricing, and through free opportunities like our Lunch & Learns.

One of Convivium's core values is Education:

"We believe that education is a powerful mechanism for cultivating inspiration, empowerment, and skills of self-reliance."

The word “empowerment” is important to us. Empowerment is the process of gaining the knowledge, skills, confidence…the agency to make informed decisions and take greater control of your own life.

For centuries, philosophers and scholars have suggested that the most meaningful form of generosity is not simply meeting an immediate need, but helping people develop the capacity to meet that need for themselves. It's the wisdom behind the familiar saying: Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Of course, there are times when people need the fish. When someone is hungry today, you feed them today. Compassion responds to immediate need.

But we believe strongly that it shouldn’t stop there.

When we also teach someone how to grow a tomato, prepare a healthy meal, read a food label, preserve the harvest, or care for a garden, we're offering something that lasts far beyond a single meal. We're building confidence alongside skills. We're creating resilience, one lesson at a time.

At Convivium, we believe education is one of the most enduring gifts we can give. Because when knowledge is shared, it multiplies. It nourishes families, strengthens communities, and empowers people to care not only for themselves, but eventually for others as well.

It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Yours convivially,
