Core Value: Sustainability

Monday, April 20, 2026

At Convivium Urban Farmstead, sustainability isn’t always the headline—but it is always present. It lives in the quiet choices, the behind-the-scenes decisions, and the belief that caring for our environment is woven into everything we do. We believe in the pursuit of sustainability, and that beyond simply using less, every act of reusing, recycling, and repurposing is, in its own way, heroic.

Sometimes, that heroism looks like transformation. Lawns that might otherwise be mowed week after week and treated with chemical fertilizers are becoming spaces that nourish instead of deplete. By growing food in yards across our community, we’re not only increasing access to fresh produce—we’re also restoring soil health, reducing chemical inputs, and reimagining what our shared landscape can be. These quiet shifts turn ordinary spaces into sources of life and connection.

You can see this value in the details of our physical space, too. The large stones flanking our parking lot are foundation stones from the historic Dubuque Packing Plant, carrying forward a piece of our city’s past. The bricks beneath your feet in our patio and driveway once paved Dubuque’s streets, now given new life as gathering spaces. Even our kitchen reflects this mindset, where we prioritize purchasing used equipment whenever possible, reducing waste while continuing to serve nourishing meals.

Other efforts are less visible but just as impactful. Our 99 solar panels quietly generate renewable energy, and our geothermal heating and cooling system works efficiently beneath the surface, reducing our environmental footprint year-round.

Sustainability, for us, is not about perfection or grand gestures. It’s about intention—about recognizing that small, thoughtful actions add up to meaningful change. These acts may be quiet, but together, they help build a more resilient, connected, and sustainable world.

Yours convivially,
