The iconic mural in Convivium’s event space was donated to Convivium by Voices Productions. The mural was commissioned by Voices to be part of their final art show in 2015.
The mural was painted by Corban D. Lundborg, whose street name is COLD. Rumor has it that his South African wife was the model for this piece. Lundborg was born and raised in the Twin Cities. And has had a varied career as a combat photographer in the U.S. Airforce, a tattoo artist and a graphic artist. Check out his website www.cold-studio.com or Instagram @corbanlundborg. |
The long comic strip mural on the south wall of the event center was painted by Beau Thomas, a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The mural is a stream of consciousness take on the life of a “writer” (the preferred term for a graffiti artist).
Starting the left, you see a young Beau being chased by the police for creating his work. Then along comes this other fella (we *think* it’s a turtle – but interpret as you wish!) who covers over Beau’s work with his own work. This act – the covering of another writer’s work – is called a “style war”. Style War was also the name of a 1980s-era documentary chronicling the life and work of several New York City-based street writers – one of whom is the gentleman all the way over on the right side of the mural. |
For those that have visited our chicken coop in the back parking lot of Convivium, you will have noticed a black and white mural depicting Iowa farming iconography. This mural was donated by Galena, Illinois based artist, filmmaker and musician Dean Wellman. He produced the piece as a backdrop for a concert/music video of the local band River Glen, that was filmed at Convivium in 2018.
