INCREASING ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOODConvivium plants and tends a series of free community garden boxes throughout the neighborhood. These are yellow, raised-bed gardens that we call our Common Beds.
During the growing season, neighbors and passersby are encouraged to harvest whatever vegetables and herbs they would like. Each bed includes signage explaining the concept and giving instruction on how and when to harvest vegetables from the bed. |
WHY GROW COMMON BED GARDENS?
Convivium is located in one of two food deserts in Dubuque, IA (the North End). A food desert is defined as an area where residents have limited access to healthful and affordable food -- this may be due to low income or having to travel farther to find healthy food options. These Common Bed gardens are our small way of trying to help offset the disparity and help increase access to fresh food in this neighborhood. They are also fun ways to expose people to to new foods or ways of growing!
