Youth Summer Camps & Classes 2019

Urban Farm & Food Camp

Ages: 5-7 (must be accompanied by an adult)

Date: Saturday, June 8 from 9:00 to 11:30 am

Connect your kids to the foods they eat through this fun, hands-on Urban Farm & Food Camp! Kids will learn how their food grows by exploring and harvesting from our nearby garden beds, they will feed and collect eggs from our backyard chickens, and learn to make a simple veggie frittata with the food they gather. This one-day camp is for kids ages 5 to 7, accompanied by an adult for the duration of the camp.

Pizza from Scratch – Kids in the Kitchen

Ages: 9-11

Date: June 12 from 9:00 to 11:00 am

Learn how to make delicious, homemade pizza in this hands-on, kids-only class! Students will mix and knead pizza dough from scratch and chop up a variety of fresh toppings before baking and enjoying their creation.

Seed to Plate Hydroponics Camp

Grades: 4 -5th graders

Dates: June 17-19, from 8:30 to 11:30 am 

Where does your food come from? What does it go through to reach your table? How can you grow your own food, have fun doing it, and help improve the health of the planet? All of these questions will be answered in this engaging and hands on experience. This camp, hosted at Convivium Urban Farmstead, will allow students to experience new ways of looking at how food is grown and prepared. Students will be engaged in understanding what plants need to grow and how that can be provided in unique ways. Both hydroponic and aquaponic techniques will be explored, and students will assist in the creation of a small, at home hydroponics system.

Homemade Pasta – Kids in the Kitchen

Ages: 12-14

Date: June 26 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm

There is nothing more delicious than fresh pasta, and making it yourself is easier than you might think! Your young chefs will learn to make pasta from scratch and then sit down to enjoy the final product.

Sweet Treats – Kids in the Kitchen

Ages: 9-11

Date: July 10 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm

Grab your chef’s hat and apron and get ready for an afternoon of delicious treat making at Convivium. Kids will learn some basic cooking skills while making summer berry tartlets, chocolate cupcakes, and a melon sorbet.

Food Geography Summer Camp

Ages: 10-12

Dates: Monday to Thursday, July 15-18 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm

No passport required to sign your child up for this four day culinary tour around the world during our Food Geography Summer Camp. The hands-on curriculum encourages healthy eating habits and teaches basic cooking skills. Classes will emphasize seasonal eating while exploring and harvesting from our gardens, and feature cooking lessons with fresh ingredients where kids prepare simple meals and healthy snacks they can then recreate at home.

Date: Wednesday, July 17 from 9:00 to 11:30 am

Everything we use comes from somewhere, but when we are done with it, where does it go? Do you know how plastic is made or what it is made from? Do you know that everything we use comes from the Earth – but what happens to the Earth in order for us to use all of its resources the way we do? And – do you REALLY know what happens to things after we throw them AWAY?

This camp will engage youth to connect with their environment and investigate the answers to these important questions through a variety of hands on activities. Join Bev Wagner of DMASWA and Eve of Sustainable Schools AmeriCorps for this interactive 2.5 hour camp for youth ages 8-10.

Bake Your Own Bread – Kids in the Kitchen

Ages: 9-11

Date: August 2 from 9:00 to 11:00 am

In this class, kids will learn to the skills and techniques to make cinnamon rolls scones and homemade breadsticks – all by hand! Kids will bake together, eat together, and take home recipes to easily recreate everything at home.

More than Just Mac & Cheese Camp

Ages: 12-14

Dates: August 5-7 from 1:00 to 4:30 pm

Do you dream of learning to cook for yourself or making recipes more elaborate than just macaroni and cheese? Join us for this intense three-day cooking series to learn and practice basic kitchen skills while making beef tacos with a fresh salsa and homemade tortillas; made from scratch ravioli with a tomato sauce, and the ultimate brunch with an Italian sausage and veggie omelet and lemon blueberry muffin.
