Creating Community Around Food During COVID-19
Here at Convivium, our mission of creating community around food has always included providing tools and education about healthy food choices to children and adults who are struggling with food insecurity. Through classes and healthy habits after-school programming, we connect people to their food source by teaching how to grow and prepare their own food.
Now, as the pandemic lingers on and our in-person classes continue to be on hold, we have seen the numbers of food insecure people, specifically in our neighborhood, steadily increase. We have seen families who have never needed support before finding themselves looking for resources to help put food on the table.
Because of this, Convivium has implemented a meal program called Community Casseroles, which provides healthy, family-sized meals for free. To date, we have distributed over 1000 casseroles to families in our community full of wholesome ingredients – many of which we grew ourselves.
We need your help to continue!
Through a grant from the City, we received funding to help us launch a 12-week pilot program. Now, eight weeks later, we know how important it is to families to continue providing one less meal for them to worry about each week. We have received feedback from patrons stating how healthy and filling the meals are; how picky eaters have tried and liked new vegetables because of the casseroles; and how appreciative they are to have one meal taken care of each week.
Your donation will help to:
- Continue offering casseroles through the end of June 2021 — 24 more weeks of wholesome meals!
- Increase from 100 to 150 meals each week.
- Offer two new distribution locations in different parts of Dubuque.
- Delivery meals to those who can’t leave the home (in partnership with DuRide)!
If you are able, please make a donation to help us continue. Your gift of $25 provides a wholesome meal to family right here in our community.
If you would like to support this free meal program, consider making a donation to help feed families or volunteering your time to help assemble the meals!

How you can help:
While there are many challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, there are a few bright sides as well. One of those has been the willingness to support our neighbors in need. Your donation of $25 helps provide food for a family who is wondering where their next meal will come from.
Help us create the meals! It takes a lot of work to make 100 casseroles from scratch each week. Tuesday mornings we prepare all of the ingredients and Wednesday evenings we assemble. We are limiting group sizes to 6 people – grab your family or friends and come join us for an evening of delicious fun!
Email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in volunteering.
Thank you to our generous supporters.
