There has been a lot going on in our back lot lately (we like to refer to is as “the back 40”). If you are familiar with Convivium’s property, you know that we have a back lot on the northwest corner of our lot — accessible from White Street. It is where our chickens live and also where we have our seed starting greenhouse and composting operation. But now…thanks to a generous grant from the Dubuque Racing Association, we also have the beginnings of of small, (6 slots) permeable-surface parking lot.
We wanted to make sure to design a lot that would divert as much storm water runoff as possible. So even though it may not be obvious, the lot is designed to collect rainwater run off from the roof our buildings and allow it to slowly seep back down into the soil, rather than run down the storm sewer (or even worse…our basement). The open areas in the concrete will (in the spring of 2020) be filled with Purington Pavers (similar to our front courtyard) which will also allow rainwater to collect in those areas and slowly seep back down into the soil.
In addition, we have plans for a small outdoor kitchen area (grill, pizza oven) which, we also plan to build in the spring — just in time for parties next summer!
