The Unplugged Workshop
March 11 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm$15
Virtually all woodworkers today rely on power tools to tackle woodworking projects, but even the most ‘plugged in’ woodworker can benefit from understanding how and when a hand tool can make a task more efficient and more importantly, produce beautiful custom details that no machine can match.
During this three hour class, you will learn effective techniques for using familiar hand tools such as a handsaw, wood chisel, and hand plane – as well as the characteristics of a variety of woods. As you learn and practice, your understanding of hand tools, wood grain, and even your use of power tools will improve! Purchase tickets here.
Crosscut and Rip Saws. You will learn the difference and why there are two different types of saws. You will also learn the correct angles and motions of cutting that will keep your saw from binding and making crooked cuts.
Wood chisels. Chisels are all too often dull, used incorrectly, and end up being relegated to opening paint cans or scraping paint. One of the most versatile tools ever created, you will discover a world of woodworking possibilities with a sharp chisel and a few basic techniques.
Hand Planes. These amazing tools can easily fix a sticking door, or true up a warped board. Unfortunately, planes are rarely used correctly, and end up being thrown in the toolbox to gather dust. During this class you will begin to unlock the secrets of the Hand Plane. Careful though…there’s no going back once you discover the magic you can create with this classic tool!
Convivium is excited to host as a guest instructor, Lyndal Anthony, who has over 12 years of experience woodworking and woodturning. He is currently the president of Nohr Woodturners Club in Platteville, WI and a professor of Industrial Studies at the University of Wisconsin Platteville.
