Basics of Woodturning Workshop – Full

March 9 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

$75

Convivium is excited to offer Basics of Woodturning – a one day workshop for beginners that will cover the basic tools and techniques of spindle and bowl turning. Taught by master woodworker, Lyndal Anthony, students will not only learn technique but gain hands-on experience turning wood to create a woodcarver’s mallet and a rustic bowl out of green wood. See the schedule outline below for more information.

Space is limited to six participants per session. Two identical sessions will be offered on March 9 and March 23 from 9 to 5 pm. Class fee is $75 which covers all materials and instruction. Purchase tickets here.

Morning 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM – Spindle Turning (Grain is horizontal to the lathe bed)

  • Spindle turning is what most people think of when they hear woodturning; common examples are baseball bats and stair step spindles.
  • You will learn the three basic movements in woodturning: straight, cove (concave curve) and beads (convex curves).
  • You will learn three tools: spindle roughing gouge, spindle gouge and parting tool
  • A take home project will be a woodcarvers mallet.  (Due to the green wood, it will crack.)

Lunch/Break 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM   Convivium’s restaurant will be open during the break.

Afternoon 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM – Bowl turning (Grain is perpendicular to the lathe bed)

  • Bowl turning is the next technique in woodturning and what most people want to learn.
  • You will learn the steps from log to finished bowl
  • Tools you will learn will be a bowl gouge and “V” nose scraper although a spindle gouge may be used for certain aspects of turning a bowl.
  • A take home from this will be a rustic bowl. (Due to the green wood, it will warp and possibly crack.)
